![]() Hands down, Ron Carter's most joyful and essential record ( Alone Together, with Jim Hall).Ĭlick to expand.yes. Idiosyncratic and brilliant discs by Joe Henderson. A long run of solid, occasionally dynamite records by Sonny Rollins. A lot of this can be credited to (or blamed on) Keepnews' (and his artists') musical conservatism - but if, like me, you like your jazz bluesy, or modal, and uptempo, it's hard to find fault with Milestone's overriding aesthetic.Īrguably, it's where McCoy Tyner did his greatest work ever (and I think Horizon is certainly his greatest album ever). A Milestone LP with strings or electric instruments is usually going to be markedly edgier than anything of the same ilk you'd find on other labels. This is a directory of record labels (record companies) in the U.S., Canada and U.K., including major record labels & independent record labels. Their releases could be hit and miss, and they had their excesses typical of the era (double live LPs aplenty flute solos and string sections) - but they almost never gave in to empty-headed pseudofunk (Columbia), or Grammy-baiting orchestral elevator jazz (CTI after 1971). Milestone was the place to go for hard-hitting, mind-expanding, toe-tapping American jazz. I don't think there's any label during Milestone's 70s heyday that compares. I've been having such a great time over the last couple of summers exploring the catalog of Milestone Records, Orrin Keepnews' label (he won't let us forget it) under, I believe, the Fantasy umbrella starting in the late 60s.
